Prevention, self-sustainability and empowerment

Nnina Olugero means: ‘I have a story, I have something to say’. It was founded in June 2012 with the main aim of empowering less fortunate people with relevant skills, knowledge and means to increase self-sustainability. The Nnina Olugero foundation works together with local organisations to enable a better future for the vulnerable people in Ugandan society.

Prevention, self-sustainability and empowerment are keys to our work.

Our mission is to equip less fortunate Ugandans with knowledge, skills and means to increase self-sustainability, empowerment and to work on the prevention of social-economic issues.

Specifically to:

  • Support underprivileged families in developing a higher family income
  • Strengthen the position of girls and women and combating violence

Our vision is that people can be self-involved because they everyone has their own piece of expertise. So you shouldn't take over a community but give people an opportunity for self-development which gives self-confidence and inspiration to do even more.

Target areas

  • Poverty and education
  • Unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions
  • Domestic violence and rights for women and children
  • Health care

Target groups:

  • Marginalized groups like commercial sex workers
  • School youth
  • HIV positive people
  • Mentally/psychically disabled people
  • Influential people like local leaders, (head) teachers, police (wo)men and nurses
  • Street children
  • Single (teen) mothers

We approach these problems through offering free interactive workshops, personal guidance and start-up kits to begin an agricultural business. We aim to make sure that our projects are working closely together so that individuals can be helped in a multidisciplinary way. For more information please visit our 'project page'.

We are both in the Netherlands as in Uganda officially registered under the Chamber of Commerce/NGO board.

We choose not to spend our money on expensive quality labels, but on the projects. We do have the Public Benefit Organisations status (PBO), also known as ANBI status, which mean that the taxes are deductible. For more information;  Find out about our ANBI status here (in Dutch).

Volunteer at Nnina Olugero through the professional guidance of Let's Go Africa

Nnina Olugero’s Dutch founder got to know Uganda through volunteering at an Ugandan vocational skill organisation for HIV positive women. Though she liked the staff very much it was difficult for her to find her purpose in the organisation since the home visits and counselling sessions where in Luganda and she didn’t know anything about hairdressing or tailoring. She didn’t feel completely used to her potential within their program as the description she read online didn’t meet the expectations.

With this experience in mind she created a program, together with the Ugandan International Volunteers Coordinator (Micheal Lubega), in which volunteers can work according to their interest and skills.

With our volunteer and intern program we are working together with the Let’s Go Africa Community Development Internship & Volunteer Agency. Their aim is to link young professionals from around the world to local projects and organisations in countries in Africa. Their vision is to foster international exchange, to enhance development, and to make an impact on all parties involved. They're experienced and specialized in long term development that is empowered by the people in the communities. At the same time they aim to achieve personal development for interns/volunteers through personal guidance, contact with the people in the communities, and the total experience as a whole.

There are many options to work as a volunteer at Nnina Olugero. For instance in a managing function, PR, English teacher, ICT, social work, health care, agriculture etc.

Because we have a lot of partner organisations it’s also possible to combine working for Nnina Olugero and at an orphanage or hospital for instance. This way we aim to create a challenging and useful experience for both the volunteer as for the organisation.
